How Western Union's quote can flatter or disappoint
Western Union is not one product. A bank-funded online deposit, a debit-card transfer and cash handed to an agent can produce three different totals on the same corridor. The recipient may also choose cash, bank or wallet delivery. Every combination has different operating economics.
The physical network is the reason to pay attention. A specialist may send more money to a bank account, yet be useless to a recipient who needs cash today. That does not excuse weak pricing, but it does explain why the service cannot be judged solely against an electronic UK-to-Europe transfer.
For a fair test, select the actual send and receive methods before reading the recipient amount. Western Union openly states that it earns from currency conversion, so a £0 headline fee should never be read as a zero-cost transfer.
