HSBC UK rates: what you pay, and what you get for it

HSBC has useful global accounts and broad bank infrastructure. A standard international payment still combines a visible charge with a signed-in customer rate, so the fee table tells only part of the story.

A win requires a completed, non-promotional quote at the same sending amount. Converter rates and modelled bank prices remain useful evidence, though neither is allowed to wear the winner's badge.

Where HSBC UK makes sense

Best for
Existing HSBC customers, particularly those using Global Money or moving money within HSBC.
Less suitable for
Anonymous public rate comparison and customers using a standard account without checking the conversion.
Where the rate cost sits
HSBC applies its customer exchange rate. The final transferable rate is generally shown inside the account flow.
What the fee tells you
Standard personal pricing lists £5 for many non-HSBC international payments through normal channels, with exceptions for account type and destination.
Delivery
International bank payment through local, EEA or Swift rails depending on the currency and destination.
Access
HSBC current accounts, Premier, business products and the Global Money Account.
THE PRICE VERDICT

How HSBC UK's quote can flatter or disappoint

There is no single HSBC transfer review without naming the account. A standard current-account international payment, Premier service and Global Money transfer can carry different rates and fees. Customers should compare the product they actually hold.

HSBC publishes the visible payment fee, but the currency conversion can be worth much more. The authenticated rate must be compared with the market reference or a specialist recipient amount at the same moment.

The international network is still useful for people who bank across countries or need a recognised bank payment. Convenience should be priced consciously rather than mistaken for a free conversion.

EARNS ITS PLACE

Where it works well

  • Large international banking network
  • Global Money can change the economics
  • Useful for HSBC-to-HSBC transfers
READ THE SMALLER PRINT

Where the value thins out

  • The public transfer rate is limited
  • Standard-account fee does not show the full FX cost
  • Different account tiers produce different answers

We do not have a reproducible public quote right now

HSBC UK remains here because UK customers will still encounter it. A rate will appear only when the amount and payment method can be recorded with a time and receipt.

THE SHORTLIST

What to price beside HSBC UK

BAR
HSBC UK or Barclays?

Barclays is convenient when the money is already in the account and the beneficiary is saved. The transferable rate sits inside the payment journey and can leave less currency than a specialist quote.

WI
HSBC UK or Wise?

Wise remains the cleanest yardstick for an ordinary bank transfer. It uses the mid-market rate and places its charge in view, so there is less detective work between the advertised rate and the amount delivered.

RE
HSBC UK or Revolut?

Revolut can be very good value for an existing customer exchanging within the plan allowance. Go beyond that allowance, or exchange at the weekend, and the apparently simple price develops rather more moving parts.
