Barclays rates: what you pay, and what you get for it

Barclays is convenient when the money is already in the account and the beneficiary is saved. The transferable rate sits inside the payment journey and can leave less currency than a specialist quote.

A win requires a completed, non-promotional quote at the same sending amount. Converter rates and modelled bank prices remain useful evidence, though neither is allowed to wear the winner's badge.

THE PRICE VERDICT

How Barclays's quote can flatter or disappoint

Barclays is easy to use for someone already inside the app, which is why many customers never request a second quote. The visible transfer charge can be small or absent while the conversion rate supplies most of the cost.

Our evidence uses reproducible public comparison material where a Barclays transfer quote cannot be captured directly. Such a result is marked indicative. It can illustrate the likely gap but cannot outrank a complete, bookable offer.

For a routine £200 payment, compare the recipient amount with Wise and Starling. For a large payment, request a live Barclays rate and a specialist or broker quote together. The absolute difference matters more than the fee label.

What to price beside Barclays

HSBC
Barclays or HSBC UK?

HSBC has useful global accounts and broad bank infrastructure. A standard international payment still combines a visible charge with a signed-in customer rate, so the fee table tells only part of the story.

WI
Barclays or Wise?

Wise remains the cleanest yardstick for an ordinary bank transfer. It uses the mid-market rate and places its charge in view, so there is less detective work between the advertised rate and the amount delivered.

ST
Barclays or Starling Bank?

Starling is unusually straight with UK customers: a 0.4% conversion charge sits beside the delivery fee. That does not always make it cheapest, but it does spare customers the usual bank-rate archaeology.
